New year is a like a festival which is hugely celebrated in almost, all the countries on earth. New year is celebrated on 31st December midnight, and the celebrations go on till morning of 1st January of the new year.

Initially, New year was celebrated on 1st March of each year, as there were only 10 months in a year then. Later, Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome included 2 more months to the calendar. And after that Roman Empire Julius Ceaser declared January 1st as the official new year day in 46 BC... So, that was a little background about the celebrations for New year
